MAGI-1 AI Video Model: Features, Architecture & Alternatives
MAGI-1 is Sand.ai's open-source, autoregressive AI video generation model. It was available on getimg.ai, but it is no longer integrated here. The model itself is far from gone, though: Sand.ai has kept the family moving with MAGI-1.1 and, more recently, MAGI-2 Preview.

What is MAGI-1?
MAGI-1 is an open-source video generation model from Sand.ai, first released in 2025. Unlike models that render a whole clip in one pass, it is autoregressive: it builds a video in successive chunks, generating each new segment on top of the ones before it.
That design makes it well suited to continuing and extending a scene rather than producing a single fixed-length clip.
How does MAGI-1 work?
It builds a clip in pieces, not all at once.
1. Generate in chunks
MAGI-1 is autoregressive. Instead of producing a whole clip at once, it generates video in successive chunks of 24 frames.
2. Prompt chunk by chunk
You can steer the model chunk by chunk, guiding how a scene evolves over time instead of committing to one fixed prompt. For general prompting tips, see our video prompting guide.
3. Denoise and continue
Each chunk is produced by denoising and is conditioned on the chunk before it, which lets MAGI-1 continue a scene and extend it beyond a single clip.
What makes MAGI-1 different?
A few design choices set MAGI-1 apart from most video models. It is autoregressive, generating a clip chunk by chunk rather than all at once. That enables chunk-wise prompting, so you can steer a scene as it unfolds, and video continuation, extending an existing clip instead of starting over.
It supports image-to-video conditioning, using a still frame as the starting point, and, unlike most commercial models, its weights and code are open source.

MAGI-1 video generation capabilities
On the technical side, MAGI-1 covers the core building blocks of modern video generation: text-conditioned generation from a prompt, image-to-video from a starting frame, video-to-video, and autoregressive continuation to extend a scene.
Its chunk-based design gives fine-grained control over how a clip develops over time, and because the model is open source, researchers and developers can inspect, fine-tune, and build on it directly.

What's new after MAGI-1?
Sand.ai has kept iterating on the MAGI family. MAGI-1.1 refined the original 24B model, and MAGI-2 Preview followed as a much larger open-source model that generates video with synced audio.
Both are open source, and neither is currently available on getimg.ai. If you want a model to use right now, the current getimg.ai video lineup is the place to start.
MAGI alternatives available on getimg.ai
MAGI-1 is gone from getimg.ai, but the current video lineup covers everything it did and pushes further. Native audio is built into many of the models, including Google Veo 3.1, Kling, and Seedance, so sound comes out of the same prompt.
