Guide to Using GPT Image References
Want better AI images? Learn how to guide GPT Image with your own photos. It’s easier than you think, and the results speak for themselves.
What Are GPT References?
Think of it like this: you give the AI a prompt, and along with it, a few images that show the look or elements you want. One might have the design style, another the background, and maybe one shows a key object or character.
That’s what GPT References do. You can upload up to three images to guide the AI. The final result combines your prompt and references into one clean, realistic image. No rough cutouts or mismatched elements, just a seamless composition that looks like it was always meant to be that way.

How to Use GPT Image References?
Step 1. Select GPT Image (or Image HD) in Image Generator
Head to our Image Generator by clicking here. Make sure you’re in the Essential mode. Then, pick GPT Image or GPT Image HD from the model list.
Step 2. Write Your Prompt
Describe the image you want to generate. It’s best to be specific, but the prompt doesn’t have to be long and very complex. Even simple descriptions work, for example:
“A wedding invitation standing on a wooden table, with mountains in the background”
This prompt tells the AI what to create, but references will shape how it looks.
Step 3. Add Image References
Select image(s) in the Image Reference section. You can add up to three references at once:
From your device – drag and drop your file or click the upload area to browse manually.
From Image Generator results – drag an existing image directly into the reference area, or hover and click “Use as image reference” (the icon looks like a target).
Click “Add reference” to include additional images (up to 3).
Your references should visually represent elements you want to appear in the final image. In our wedding invitation example, they can include:
a photo of the wedding invitation itself, and
a scenic mountain backdrop.
Step 4. Generate Your Image
Once your prompt and references are set, click “Create images”. The model will combine your references with your prompt to create a polished, realistic output. It will only take a moment!
That’s it! Now you know how to guide GPT Image with your own visuals. Try it out and see just how easy (and insanely powerful) it is.
