We’ve heard your call for a better Image to Video experience and are thrilled to deliver! We're transitioning from to a new model that lets you create stunning 5-second clips with exceptional quality. Eager to find out how this upgrade will transform your projects? Keep reading for all the juicy details!

Why is this a big deal?

Let’s be real: while Stable Video Diffusion served us well, it was time for an upgrade. Runway Gen-3 represents a massive leap forward in quality and creativity. With SVD, you had some basic capabilities, but it couldn’t offer the control and flexibility that creators like you crave.

When using Runway Gen-3, you’re no longer constrained. You can now direct your animations with specific prompts, allowing you to create intricate scenes and movements tailored to your vision. At the same time, you don’t have to worry about fiddling with complicated settings like FPS and level of motion.

Take a look at the comparison below and judge it for yourself!

And made a video with SDV:

Now, here's how Runway Gen-3 performed:

Prompt: "cosmic void pouring out of a person's unzipped face, hyperrealistic skin texture, particle systems for void, anamorphic lens flares"

The difference is clear: while SVD was a great starting point, Runway Gen-3 opens the door to a world of new possibilities.

What is Runway Gen-3?

Runway Gen-3 is a state-of-the-art video generation system launched in July 2024. It builds on the capabilities of its predecessors, Gen-1 and Gen-2, by enhancing video quality, consistency, and user control.

It's also incredibly versatile, performing well no matter what type of image you're working on, from more abstract themes (as shown in the previous example) to more realistic ones.

Prompt: "dynamic rocket launch, flames and smoke roaring, rapid upward motion, intense cinematic film grain, anamorphic lens flares, dramatic volumetric lighting, deep blacks and bright highlights, high-speed focus shifts"

Thanks to its fluid, natural transitions between frames, natural human movements, and the ability to add cool effects, it’s easier than ever to make your projects stand out. Professional-grade short videos are just a click away!

Prompt: "monochromatic noir scene, man walking backward toward the light in heavy rain, vintage 35mm film grain, flickering edges, soft vignetting, high-contrast lighting, moody shadows, subtle motion blur, scratches and dust particles"

How to use the new Image to Video tool?

Our upgrade made the interface even simpler than before, so getting started with Image to Video is a breeze. Here’s how it works:

  1. Head to the Image to Video tool and upload an image. For best results, ensure your input image matches the desired output aspect ratio.

  2. Select your aspect ratio. Choose between 16:9 for widescreen or 9:16 for vertical videos.

  3. Write a prompt. Specify movements or effects you want to see, giving you total control over the animation process.

  4. When you’re ready, click “Generate video” and wait for the process to finish.

Tip:

Prompting with Runway Gen-3 works quite differently than with Text to Image models like FLUX.1. Check out our guide to prompting in Image to Video for more details to avoid costly mistakes!

Once your video is created, you can view, download, delete, or press “Generate similar” to copy its parameters (input image, aspect ratio, and prompt).

Now it’s your turn. Don’t miss out—jump into the new and improved Image to Video tool and start making your ideas come alive!
