Guide to using Image to Video

Learn how to turn static images into dynamic 5-second clips with our Image to Video tool. Simple steps, stunning results—no experience required!

How to use Image to Video?

Step 1. Upload your image

The first thing you’ll need is a great image to start with. The better your input, the better your video result.

There are several ways to upload an image. You can:

  • drag and drop it in the marked spot;

  • press the upload area and select a file from your device;

  • click on an image in the Gallery, “Reuse image”, then “Open in Image to Video”;

  • open the three dots menu in the top right corner of an image in AI Generator and select “Open in Image to Video”.

For the best output, the aspect ratio of your image should match the video output you want.

Step 2. Write a prompt

Your prompt should describe exactly what you want to see happen in the video, including character movement, particle effects, and camera pans.

Tip:

Prompting with Runway Gen-3 works quite differently than with Text to Image models like FLUX.1. Check out our guide to prompting in Image to Video for more details to avoid costly mistakes!

Step 3. Select an aspect ratio

Before generating your video, make sure you’ve selected the correct aspect ratio. Simply choose between 16:9 or 9:16, depending on your needs.

If you're going for a widescreen, 16:9 is the way to go. Prefer vertical videos for social media? Choose 9:16.

Step 4. Generate

Once your prompt is ready, just hit “Generate video”. The model will get to work and turn your image into a fully animated video.

Once it’s finished, you’ll be able to:

  • view it;

  • download it to your device in a MPEG4 format;

  • delete it;

  • generate similar clips.

Now it’s your turn. Upload an image, write a killer prompt, and generate your first video with just a few clicks!
