Guide to Using Reference Images in Seedance 1.0 Lite
Learn to control the timing of your AI video. This guide covers how to introduce characters, reveal objects, and build your scene piece by piece with Reference Images.
What are Reference Images?
The Reference Images feature, available for Seedance 1.0 Lite in our Video Generator's Image to Video mode, gives you precise control over your video by letting you specify both the what and the when.
You upload your own images for key elements, and then use your prompt to introduce them into the scene at exactly the right moment. For example, you can show an environment first, then make a specific character appear later.

The large panda toy sits on the hand above the clouds. sun shines majestically on it. Surround lens, slowly advance to a close-up of the panda. Shot switch. Screen with the panda logo appears briefly.
How to use Reference Images in Seedance 1.0 Lite
Step 1. Open Video Generator
Head to Video Generator, pick the Image to Video mode, and select Seedance 1.0 Lite as your model, or simply click here.
Step 2. Write your prompt
The key is to effective Reference Images prompts is to tell the model what happens first, and what happens next. Use simple, clear words to show sequence.
- Good keywords: "First," "Then," "After a moment," "Next," "enters the frame," "appears on screen."
When you want to “call in” a reference, you can simply describe it, or, for maximum control, refer to it by name, like [Image 1]
, etc.
A person from [Image 1] is standing in a field. After a moment, a UFO from [Image 2] slowly flies into the frame from above.
This makes it crystal clear to the model what each image represents.
Step 3. Pick the Reference Images feature
Select Reference Images to activate it.
You can’t use Frame Control (which lets you select the first and/or last frame of the video) and Reference Images at the same time.
Step 4. Upload your Reference Images
Upload up to four images from your device, or choose from your getimg.ai Gallery.
These can be a person, an object, an environment, a piece of clothing, or any other element you want to see in your video.
Step 5. Generate
Tweak parameters such as aspect ratio or video duration to fit your project. Then, click Generate and wait a moment while Seedance 1.0 Lite brings it all together.
Review the result, then refine your prompt or swap references if needed.
