Guide to Video Editing Basics
Learn the basics of editing videos in getimg.ai: change backgrounds, remove objects, restyle clips and recast people with simple prompts.
Video editing in getimg.ai works like image editing: you describe the change in plain words, and the AI makes a new version of your clip. There are no timelines, masks or tracking to set up.
How It Works
Every edit starts from a video that becomes a video reference. You can start in two ways:
- From the full video view (for any video already in your gallery, including uploads).
- From the Create video prompt box (for a clip you upload or pick from your gallery).
In both, you can add more references to the same edit with the Reference button, like a photo of a location or a person, another clip, or a music track.
Each edit creates a new video. The video you started from stays in your gallery as it was.
Option 1. Edit from Full Video View
- Log into getimg.ai and click any video in your gallery, a folder or your Uploads. It opens in full view.
- Look at the prompt box below the video. Your clip is already attached to it as a video reference.
- Optionally, click the Reference button in the prompt box to add more references, like a photo of a new location or a music track.
- Type what should change, for example: replace the background with a sunset beach.
- Click the model button in the bottom left of the prompt box and choose one of the listed models. The list only shows the available models that support videos as references.
- Click the arrow in the prompt box. The edited video appears in your gallery as a new video.
Say what should stay as well as what should change, for example: change her jacket to red leather and keep her face, the street and the camera move the same. It usually keeps the result closer to your original shot.
Option 2. Edit from the Create Video Prompt Box
Step 1. Open Create video
Open Create video in the sidebar, under the Video group.
Step 2. Choose a model that supports videos as references
Click the model button in the bottom left of the prompt box and pick one of the available models that support videos as references. Video references only work with these models.
Step 3. Add your video
Add the clip you want to edit in one of these ways:
- Click the Reference button in the prompt box, then press Upload file or Select existing.
- Hover over a video in your gallery, click ⋯, and select Use as reference in video.
Step 4. Add other references (optional)
You can add a photo or an audio file to the same edit, for example a photo of a location for a new background, a photo of a person to recast the clip, or a music track. One generation can combine up to three videos, up to three audio files and images.
Step 5. Write your edit prompt
Describe the change and mention any extra references. Examples:
- remove the people walking in the background
- replace the background with the harbor in the photo
- turn this video into a hand-drawn 90s anime
- make it night with wet streets and lit windows
Step 6. Generate
Click the arrow in the prompt box. The edited video appears in the gallery above the prompt box, and your original stays as it was.
What You Can Change
Most edits fall into a few types:
- Backgrounds and locations: move a person or product to a new setting, described in words or shown in a photo.
- Objects and people: remove passers-by, signs or props, or add or swap objects.
- Style: turn live footage into anime, a cartoon, a comic or a watercolor.
- Look and conditions: change outfits, colors, weather or the time of day.
- The person on screen: recast the clip with someone from a photo, using your own face, a fictional character you have the rights to use, or someone who agreed to appear.
Limits to Know
The maximum length of the clip you can attach as a reference, and so edit, varies by model:
Model | Max length of the attached clip |
Seedance 2.5 | 30 seconds |
MiniMax H3 | 15 seconds |
MiniMax H3 Max | 15 seconds |
Kling 4.0 | 30 seconds in total, across up to 5 clips |
Wan 3.0 | 15 seconds |
- An edit is a new video generated from your clip, so it closely follows the movement and timing of the original, but small details can differ.
- The result is always a full video. Edits cannot produce a transparent background.

Yes. An AI face swap video starts from your clip and a photo of the new person (a clear, front-facing one works best): attach both and ask for the swap, for example: recast him with the man in the photo. Use your own face, a fictional character you have the rights to use, or someone who agreed to appear.
