Use ControlNet to guide your image generation

ControlNet is a neural network that works alongside image generation models that lets you guide AI outputs using reference images. Instead of generating pictures from just a text prompt, ControlNet allows you to use structural data—like edges, depth, or pose—from a source image to influence the result.

This means you can retain the layout, shapes, or perspective of your original image, while freely changing its style or subject. It gives you more precision and control, especially useful for creative tasks like design, concept art, or even product mockups.

Traditional AI image generation can be unpredictable—it might ignore key parts of your prompt or give you wildly different results each time. ControlNet adds structure to the process by “anchoring” the generation to visual cues like lines, outlines, or depth from an uploaded image.

This makes it easier to replicate results, keep important details intact, or match a specific visual style. Whether you want to preserve the composition of a sketch or mimic the depth of a photo, ControlNet helps the AI stay on track.

ControlNet Canny, often called Hard Edges, uses edge detection to map out the strongest lines and contours in an image. These hard edges serve as a blueprint for the AI, helping it maintain the original structure while changing everything else—like colors, textures, or art style.

It’s ideal when you want to reimagine an image without losing its core layout. For example, you can turn a photo into a comic-style illustration while keeping the same pose and framing.

ControlNet Depth analyzes the foreground and background of your image to understand how far away objects are from the viewer. This depth map lets the AI generate new images that feel three-dimensional and spatially accurate.

It’s especially useful when you want to keep the realism or perspective of an original photo but explore new visual directions. You can change scenes, styles, or characters—while still keeping the spatial relationships consistent.
